What is ransomware?
Ransomware is a dangerous type of malware designed to block access to a victim’s computer system by encrypting critical files until a hefty sum of money demanded by the attacker is paid. The vast majority of ransomware is distributed via email.
Anatomy of a Ransomware Attack
While modern ransomware attacks range from simple “ransomware in a box” to customized malware designed specifically
to evade detection, attacks generally follow the same four phases:
Cybercriminals can easily purchase ransomware on the Dark Web or quickly launch attacks using hosted ransomware services.
Threat actors launch attack campaigns, often masquerading as a known or trusted individual or organization.
Tricked into thinking that the email is from a trusted partner or colleague, the recipient unsuspectedly opens the malicious attachment it contains. Once opened, the ransomware is activated and payment is demanded.
When activated, the ransomware locks up the victim’s system until payment is made to the attackers in the form of untraceable Bitcoin. In many instances, victims never regain control of their systems - even once the specified ransom is paid.

Cybercriminals are constantly evolving their tactics, leveraging techniques such as identity deception and domain spoofing to deceive even highly trained security professionals into downloading ransomware. Zero-day ransomware attacks, which are launched with no advanced warning, do not contain any recognizable digital signature and employ advanced tactics to evade traditional detection methods, are becoming increasingly prevalent.
Guardian Digital EnGarde Cloud Email Security’s auto-learn security system employs a combination of dynamic malicious URL and attachment protection, real-time behavioral analysis and drive-by download protection to defend against emerging ransomware attacks before they exploit unknown vulnerabilities to reach the inbox.
